Progressions – The Most Important Indicators

The secondary progression method of one day equaling one year became popular because it proved both practical and symbolically coherent: the natal chart appears to unfold from the first days after birth into the years of life. To examine age thirty, for example, astrologers use planetary positions from approximately the thirtieth day after birth. In this way, each day after birth symbolically corresponds to one year of life.

The main reason for the method’s popularity is its time scale. Transits show the external movement of the planets in the present, while secondary progressions show how the natal chart develops and matures from within. Progressed Moon

The progressed Moon is one of the main indicators of the psychological and event-related background. It shows where the person’s emotional attention is directed. This is not necessarily the area that is objectively most important, but the area in which the inner nature is currently seeking experience.

The sign of the progressed Moon describes the emotional style of a period lasting approximately two and a half years.

• Last Quarter — reassessment.
• Balsamic Phase — completion and preparation for a new cycle.

How the Progressed Moon Phase Is Calculated

First, calculate a secondary progressions chart for the required age or date. Then note the longitude of the progressed Sun and the longitude of the progressed Moon.

Moon phase angle = Moon longitude − Sun longitude

• 0°–45° — New Moon / Early Waxing Phase
• 45°–90° — Crescent Phase

Progressed Mercury

Mercury shows how a person’s thinking changes over time: language, interests, learning methods, communication style, decisions, documents, travel, contacts, and perception of information.

While the progressed Moon shows where emotional attention is directed and the progressed Sun describes who the person is gradually becoming, progressed Mercury shows how the person begins to think, understand, speak, and explain life to themselves.

Progressed Mercury Retrograde

When Mercury becomes retrograde in secondary progressions, the person may enter a prolonged period of reconsideration. They may place less trust in external opinions and examine their own thoughts more deeply. This can bring intensive study, a return to old subjects, revision of beliefs, and work involving the past.

When Mercury turns direct again, the opposite process often begins. After a long inward period, the person may feel a stronger desire to speak, write, teach, explain, reconnect with others, and bring ideas into the outer world.

Progressed Venus Retrograde

When Venus becomes retrograde in secondary progressions, the person enters a prolonged period of reviewing feelings and values. They may develop a new understanding of whom they love, what they want, what they consider beautiful and valuable, and what deserves an investment of energy.

This may bring:

• the return of old relationships or feelings;
• reassessment of a marriage or partnership;
• greater emotional reserve in love;
• reconsideration of self-esteem;
• changes in taste and aesthetics;
• rejection of former pleasures;

Progressed Mars

Progressed Mars shows how the person’s will changes over time: the way they act, assert themselves, express courage and anger, experience sexuality, take initiative, compete, and pursue what they want.

While progressed Venus shows what the person begins to desire and value, progressed Mars shows how they begin to act in pursuit of those desires. It describes not only conflict or energy but also the way the person now asserts themselves in life.

Progressed Mars is especially important when it:

• changes signs;
• changes Houses;
• turns retrograde or direct;
• forms an exact aspect to the natal Sun, Moon, Venus, Saturn, Uranus,
• Neptune, Pluto, AC, DC, or MC.

The sign of progressed Mars shows how the person now acts, becomes angry, struggles, and expresses desire.

The House of progressed Mars shows the area of life in which activity, force, competition, or conflict becomes prominent.

Aspects of progressed Mars show through which natal themes the person learns to use strength, will, and initiative.

Progressed Mars Retrograde

When Mars becomes retrograde in secondary progressions, energy begins to turn inward. The person may act less directly while reconsidering anger, desire, sexuality, courage, and the right to fight for themselves more deeply.

This may bring:

• reduced outward assertiveness;
• the accumulation of inner irritation;
• reassessment of goals;
• the return of old conflicts;
• work with suppressed aggression;
• more cautious action;
• rejection of a former way of fighting.

When Mars turns direct, it may become easier for the person to act openly after a long inward period. They may express their will more courageously, launch projects, defend themselves, and move forward.

Progressed Jupiter and Beyond

Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are usually not the primary moving indicators in secondary progressions because they may cover very few degrees during a lifetime. However, astrologers pay attention to them under particular conditions.

Jupiter becomes important when it:

• forms an exact aspect to the natal Sun, Moon, AC, or MC;
• conjoins one of the chart angles;
• changes Houses or signs;
• turns retrograde or direct;
• is especially prominent in the natal chart, for example by ruling the AC, MC, Sun, Moon, 9th House, or 10th House;
• is supported by relevant transits.

Simply having progressed Jupiter in Taurus is usually not especially important when it occupied the same sign at birth and has moved very little.
Progressed Jupiter exactly on the MC or in a precise aspect to the Sun, however, is a much more significant indicator.

Aspects of Progressed Planets to the Natal AC, DC, MC, and IC

The natal angles are the structural axes of the chart. When a progressed planet contacts one of them, its theme may move from inner development into visible life. An aspect from a progressed planet to one of these angles can make the planet’s meaning more noticeable, event-related, or pivotal.

Progressed planets often describe inner changes. When they contact the angles, those changes tend to become more visible externally.

How to Interpret Aspects to the Angles

• progressed planet = which function has matured;
• natal angle = where that function enters external life;
• aspect = how this occurs;
• natal chart = how important the theme was from the beginning.

Aspects to the angles can be interpreted reliably only when the birth time is accurate.
When the birth time is uncertain, the AC, DC, MC, and IC may be displaced.

Aspects of progressed planets to the natal angles describe periods when an inner change reaches the main axes of life.

• AC — the self, body, and personal image.
• DC — relationships and partners.
• MC — career and status.
• IC — home, family, and the inner foundation.

The most important contacts are often those made by the progressed Moon, Sun, Venus, and Mars to the natal AC, DC, MC, or IC, especially conjunctions, squares, and oppositions.

Stationary Periods and Changes of Direction in Secondary Progressions

A stationary period in secondary progressions occurs when a progressed planet appears to stop before changing direction, moving from direct motion to retrograde motion or from retrograde motion to direct motion. In astrological interpretation, such a planet becomes especially significant because its function is concentrated and remains prominent in the person’s inner life for an extended period.

A change of direction indicates a profound shift in how the planet’s energy is expressed. When a planet turns retrograde, its theme often moves inward: the person begins to review, reconsider, return to past experience, and search for new inner answers. When a planet turns direct, its energy may begin to move outward more easily after a prolonged inward period: the person becomes more prepared to act, speak, choose, love, assert themselves, or expand openly.

Changes of direction involving progressed Mercury, Venus, and Mars are especially important because these planets are connected with thinking, relationships, and will. Stationary Mercury may bring matters of education, speech, documents, and decision-making to the center of attention. Stationary Venus intensifies themes of love, values, money, taste, and self-esteem. Stationary Mars concentrates themes of action, strength, anger, initiative, sexuality, and struggle.

These periods do not always manifest as a single sudden event. More often, they describe a prolonged inner adjustment that may last for years. The planet appears to change the way it operates: what was once expressed automatically no longer works in the same way. The person must rediscover how they think, love, act, believe, establish boundaries, or make decisions.

Ingress into a New Sign or House

In secondary progressions, an ingress is not simply the moment when a planet is already in a new sign. It is a transitional corridor in which the old pattern has not yet disappeared while the new one has already begun to emerge.

For interpretive purposes, the ingress zone may be considered approximately 29° of the old sign through 3° of the new sign, with the transition often felt most strongly from 0° to 3° of the new sign.

Ingress into a New House

• 1° before the cusp — the theme of the new House begins to approach;
• exact conjunction with the cusp — activation of the new area;
• 0°–1° after the cusp — the most noticeable transition;
• 1°–3° after the cusp — adaptation to the new area of life;
• 3°–5° after the cusp — the planet is functioning fully within the new House.

The ingress of a progressed planet into a new sign shows that its former mode of expression is completing its cycle. The person gradually stops operating through an old inner pattern and begins learning a new psychological language. The first degrees of the new sign are often experienced as a period of uncertainty: the new direction is already calling, but it has not yet become familiar.

The transition of a progressed planet into a new House shows a shift in life emphasis. The planet’s basic function remains the same, but it now begins to operate within a different area of life. During the first degrees after the cusp, the person is only entering the new theme, so events may not yet be final, but attention has already shifted noticeably in that direction.

Moon Ingress

The Moon’s ingress is experienced quickly but noticeably because it moves approximately 1° per month.
