Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oklahoma, Illinois, USA. He grew up in Chicago and began his career as a journalist working for a local newspaper.
During World War I, Hemingway volunteered for the Red Cross in Italy. This experience greatly influenced his later literary work.
In the 1920s he moved to Paris, where he became part of the Lost Generation cultural scene and befriended writers such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Gerald Durrell. At this time he began to publish his first works.
Hemingway became famous for his simple but emotionally charged writing style. His novels, such as A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea, have become classics of American literature. He often experimented with form and structure, creating new literary techniques.
Ernest Hemingway faced a number of difficulties throughout his life, including problems with alcohol and depression. On July 2, 1961, he committed suicide at his home in Ketchum, Idaho.
