Kirk Douglas (real name Issur Danielovich Demsky; 1916–2020) was an American actor, producer, director, and writer, one of the greatest stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age. During his long career, he starred in more than 90 films and became a symbol of courage and strength on screen.
He was born on December 9, 1916, in Amsterdam, New York, to poor Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. From a young age, he showed an interest in theater and, thanks to a scholarship, entered the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York.
After serving in the United States Navy during World War II, Douglas began his acting career on Broadway. He made his film debut in 1946 in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.
He rose to fame in the 1950s with roles in The Champion (1949), Ace in the Hole (1951) and The Bad and the Beautiful (1952).
The title role in Spartacus (1960), which he also produced, became his calling card.
Other notable works include Train to Triumph (1951), 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954), Lust for Life (1956) and Paths of Glory (1957).
Kirk Douglas was known for his fight against the Hollywood blacklist, actively supporting screenwriters and directors who came under suspicion of communist sympathies.
He was married twice, his second marriage to Anne Buydens (from 1954) lasted more than 65 years. He has four children, including actor Michael Douglas.
Although he was nominated for an Oscar three times, he received the honorary award only in 1996 for his outstanding contribution to cinema.
He died on February 5, 2020, at the age of 103.
