Indira Gandhi (1917–1984) was the first and only woman to serve as Prime Minister of India, and one of the most influential and controversial figures in the country’s history. Born in Allahabad to the future first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, she studied in Switzerland and Oxford, and took her surname from her husband, Feroze Gandhi (no relation to Mahatma Gandhi). Involved in politics from a young age, she became her father’s private secretary after India’s independence, and in 1966, she became Prime Minister. During her reign, India won the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh and achieved food self-sufficiency thanks to the Green Revolution. However, the State of Emergency of 1975–1977 was accompanied by restrictions on civil liberties and arrests of the opposition.
In 1980, Gandhi returned to power, but her second term was marred by conflict with Sikh separatists: in June 1984, she ordered the storming of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, which resulted in numerous casualties. On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh bodyguards in revenge for this operation. Link to biography.
