A Russian poet of the Silver Age and founder of Acmeism, he was born on April 15, 1886, in Kronstadt to a military doctor. He was sickly as a child, but he read a lot and loved to fantasize. He studied at the Tsarskoye Selo Gymnasium, where the director was the poet Innokenty Annensky, who valued his poetry and once saved him from expulsion. In 1903, he met Anna Gorenko, the future Anna Akhmatova, and this meeting largely shaped his life and work.
Gumilyov began publishing poetry early: in 1905, he self-financed the collection “The Path of the Conquistadors,” which received a critical review from Valery Bryusov, but predicted that “victories and conquests are yet to come.” He then went to Paris, attended lectures at the Sorbonne, and published the journal “Sirius.” He passionately loved Africa, traveling to Egypt and Ethiopia several times, collecting ethnographic collections for the Kunstkamera, and these impressions became the basis for his exotic lyricism. In 1910, he married Akhmatova. In 1911, he founded the “Poets’ Workshop” and, together with like-minded individuals, proclaimed Acmeism—a movement opposed to vague symbolism and demanding clarity, objectivity, and precision. With the outbreak of World War I, he volunteered for the front and was awarded two St. George’s Crosses for bravery. In 1918, he divorced Akhmatova and, a year later, married Anna Engelhardt.
In August 1921, Gumilyov was arrested on suspicion of participating in the “Tagantsev conspiracy” and executed in Petrograd at the age of only 35. For a long time, the exact date of his execution remained unknown, and only in 2014 did historians establish that he was executed on the night of August 26, 1921. Karmic indicators help a person become aware of deep-rooted problems that go back to past lives, and begin working on themselves in order to overcome them and improve both this life and, potentially, the next one. Karmic problems should not be understood as punishment for misdeeds and sins, as karma is usually interpreted in the everyday sense. Karma is not retribution, but rather inertia, when a person attracts similar situations from one life to another. From a karmic point of view, every element of the natal chart can be interpreted without exception. However, the most important indicators of karma in the horoscope are retrograde planets, if any, and the Lunar Nodes.
Retrograde Planets
Retrograde planets are always connected with turning back to the past. The more retrograde planets a person has in the horoscope, the stronger their connection with the past. A retrograde planet also points to an unresolved task from a past life, unfinished business, or unrealized abilities. It forces the person to take up again what could not be completed in the past. Retrograde Mercury — Individuality
When Mercury is retrograde in the horoscope, the individual’s conscious mind is able to intercept ideas from the universal consciousness of earlier times. Usually, they are not aware of this, but they are aware that they cannot easily make others understand everything they know. This is partly connected with the inversion of the Mercury symbol, in which the significance of Matter exceeds the significance of Spirit and Soul. This is often interpreted by others as “coldness,” but it is simply the vibration of retrograde Mercury, which is so obviously disharmonious with the vibrations of direct motion. Behind the apparent wall, this individual is far more sensitive than most people can imagine.
Once the communication barrier has been crossed, tremendous understanding and intuition emanate from retrograde Mercury. The retrograde individual does not fit into the ideas and opinions of the people around them. Instead, they can find peace in gratitude for their unique way of seeing things.
It is interesting to note that many people with musical talent have retrograde Mercury. Perhaps awareness of difficulties with spoken language led them to another form of communication, one that has much greater freedom and many levels of subtle mental and emotional expression.
Retrograde Mercury — Karma
A person with retrograde Mercury must experience unresolved relationship karma. They react to others as if those people symbolize figures from their past. Thus, it is difficult for them to keep the focus of their consciousness on the “here and now.” Usually, this manifests as difficulties with family and relatives. But the issue of relationships extends beyond communication with other people and includes the perception of the universe as a whole. There is often a problem characteristic of retrograde Mercury in terms of seeing what may be called an inverted reality. The individual has difficulty understanding the basic relationship between cause and effect. They explore the essence of life itself, yet often cannot see the simple connections between things, circumstances, and people. Lost in thoughts that lie beyond their understanding, they must learn to be content with the simple things on which life is based. They are so absorbed in uncovering what is beyond their understanding that they almost always miss the obvious.
From a karmic point of view, this individual must learn to focus attention on the reality of the present rather than lose themselves in all the apparent layers they perceive. When they are able to do this, they will be able to establish a solid point of reference in the “here and now,” through which all the discoveries they make can be expressed to the outer world.
Retrograde Mercury in Aries
Here, the individual feels most comfortable during Phase I of the retrograde process, when their thirst for understanding carries them forward through the cardinal, Martian qualities of Aries, so that they once again experience the primitive part of their mental development from previous incarnations. All thought and sensory patterns reflect their almost childlike desire to prove their mental competence.
Lacking patience, they often suffer from shortsightedness because of impulsive thinking. This throws them out of temporal alignment with most of the people they speak with. Nevertheless, this individual is a strong debater and enjoys the challenge of mental stimulation. This allows them to prove that they are worthy, even if the reasons they consider themselves inadequate do not come from this life. Constantly wanting to know whether they are good enough in the eyes of others, they rush forward to prove that they can meet the challenges of their past. In doing so, the people whose understanding they originally desired are already out of the frame.
Retrograde Mercury is least harmonious with the sign of Aries during Phase III, when the individual goes back in their consciousness in order to reexperience what has already been lived through. For this reason, the individual hates repeating themselves and actively complains about the need to live in a world that loses intellectual stimulation by constantly reviewing what has already been completed.
Retrograde Mercury in the Twelfth House
Here, the individual spends most of their time in Phase III of the retrograde process. In the absorbing, introspective vibration, they turn most of their thoughts inward in order to understand the inner nature of their existence. With this position, every conscious thought is karmic. Everything the individual perceives is a continuation of their past ideas about the interconnection of things, people, and circumstances in the universe. They are immersed in themselves and, on a personal level, become introverted. They are constantly thinking, replaying past conversations for days and weeks after they actually took place. In a certain sense, the individual experiences the pure essence of perception in its rawest form. This is very difficult for most individuals to cope with.
Their frequent disorientation in time and space knows no limits and extends beyond the boundaries of the current life, as well as the planet on which they now live. They may be mystically oriented, as they try to perceive the universe through themselves. Thus, they may experience in their life anything they allow themselves to think about. Truly, this is an individual who has become exactly what they thought themselves to be.
Other people almost always misunderstand them, because the Neptunian essence of their ideas becomes awkward when they try to express it to others during the absorbing, introverted Phase III of the retrograde process. They underestimate themselves, tending to withdraw from real life rather than express themselves freely outwardly. Some people with this position of retrograde Mercury have excellent musical abilities, since words often seem an inadequate means of expression, leading the individual into other creative spheres for expressing their thoughts. On the negative side, some people with this position may experience long periods of mental depression, during which they try to sort through the many thoughts absorbed from the formless universe. The individual must karmically understand themselves on the deepest levels.
To do this, they spend a great deal of time away from the outer world, whose events would prevent them from seeing the source of their inner existence. Thus, they avoid the lighter side of life and focus most of their attention on the deep mysteries encountered by their inner mind. They are a true scholar of the past and can become an excellent metaphysician when they direct their mental energy toward universal knowledge.
Retrograde Mars — Individuality
It is not easy for this individual to coordinate their needs. They have difficulty coordinating thought and action. The past, everything they have truly experienced, remains on the periphery of their consciousness. They also experience sexual difficulties because of the reverse magnetism of the retrograde planet. This is mainly due to their inability to regulate the flow of energy that this planetary position causes them to experience.
Much of what they will experience depends less on thoughts or emotions and more on the ability to manage their energy levels in coordination with the energies they receive from other people. They may react very strongly to a person. Their powerful attachments or dislikes may be based entirely on energies rather than on human sympathies.
Because of this, the individual’s relationships are almost always somewhat distorted. On the sexual level, they apparently symbolize more of a struggle for survival than an actual union with another person. They may jump to conclusions while at the same time delaying the necessary actions that would correct whatever is troubling them. If retrograde Mars is in an air sign, the individual is unusually mentally active and finds it difficult to learn how to relax.
This Mars position is more difficult for women than for men, because the drive system may not correspond to the rest of the horoscope and may diminish femininity. Very few women with this Mars position have, on a subconscious level, a love for men in general. However, on the conscious level, the clear opposite sometimes appears through placing men on a pedestal. This creates a kind of idol worship that brings the woman closer to her subconscious reality by inwardly creating the need to remove the pedestal.
In most positions, retrograde Mars produces a feeling of guilt that isolates the individual, leaving them apart from the free personal relationships characteristic of people with Mars in direct motion.
Retrograde Mars — Karma
When Mars is retrograde in the horoscope, all the individual’s actions in the current life are a restoration of the past. In this life, the individual tries to find people who symbolize those who satisfied them in past incarnations. In their mind, they assign roles to these figures who no longer exist and try, with them, to act out everything they could not previously express. They exert too much influence on people in an attempt to “fit” them into the imaginary roles they have devised for them. They encounter rejection that is too strong and deeply felt, but they do not understand why; they retreat into themselves, never fully experiencing the relationships of their current life in the present moment.
They tend to focus on those times in the past when they dealt with force. Now they subconsciously call forth a vibration toward that same force, whether it is anger, revenge, hostility, or the wrong action of each person in the present. In some cases, they may carry hostility from a past life that makes them distrust the actions of other people. In at least one past life, they experienced suspicious actions or deception from others. The residue of this in the current life weighs heavily on their present behavior.
Retrograde Mars in Virgo
This is one of the most difficult positions of retrograde Mars from the standpoint of personal relationships. If Mars were not retrograde, the individual would evaluate all desires from the standpoint of perfect ideas. Retrograde motion changes these feelings, and the individual is forced to live according to their ideals rather than merely expect this from others. Thus, they judge themselves while trying to preserve their illusion of perfection. They have an inner fear of other people and communicate more easily with objects than with people. They are very sensitive and overreact to pressure from those around them. Many people with this Mars position defend themselves against a repetition of past pain by deliberately closing themselves off from real closeness with others. Often, they feel neglected by those whom they tried to please in the past.
It is difficult for this person to relax, because mental energy is stimulated by the sexual impulse. Sometimes this creates a very active interest in sexuality with very little physical expression.
The person has an enormous need to seek perfection within themselves. In previous lives, they learned to distinguish among their desires, and now they carefully sort everything into mental compartments. Sensing imperfection in the actions of other people, they may feel extreme distrust toward every new person they meet. When a relationship develops, they try to find a flaw in the other person’s character that will eventually convince them that their preprogrammed ways of relating to this person were justified and correct.
If the person with retrograde Mars in Virgo listened to what they say or think about others, they would learn that the perfection they are seeking begins within themselves.
Retrograde Mars in the Sixth House
Here, the individual is caught in a conflict between how much they should do for others and how much they should do for themselves. They offend and irritate others by instructing them on how to do something, while subconsciously wanting their advice at the same time. Extremely independent, they strive to be the ruler of their own life amid a stream of external circumstances that dictate the direction of their energy. They do not want others to use them, yet this very thought causes them to invite into their life the kinds of people who can do so. They may be unusually cold when a situation calls for warmth, because they have not yet fully learned to trust other people’s motives.
In the sphere of work, they tend to underestimate the value of their own output. They seek self-improvement through their activities and, being overly critical of themselves, expect too much from others as well. In some cases, this leads to a tendency to blame others. All of this is caused by their experience of the karma of seeking perfection in action. And as they try to put the world around them in order, they slowly begin to put themselves in order. Nevertheless, their approach to life is overly harsh, and on all levels they would do well to follow the advice of the Desiderata: “Above all, be gentle with yourself.” When they learn this, their entire view of other people will change dramatically.
Retrograde Jupiter - Individuality
A native with retrograde Jupiter is a living truth unto themselves. Their ideas about right and wrong, about the morality of the world through which they travel, and about the honesty of other people’s opinions have little influence on what they feel within. In an attempt to be fair, this native develops their own unique set of standards.
