Igor Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky was born in 1882 near St. Petersburg to an opera singer. He studied law, but also took private composition lessons with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. A decisive turning point in his life came after meeting Sergei Diaghilev: for his Ballets Russes in Paris, Stravinsky wrote the ballets The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring. The premiere of the latter in 1913 was accompanied by scandal due to its frantic rhythms and dissonances, but it was this ballet that forever changed the musical language of the 20th century.
After World War I and the Revolution, the composer remained in exile: first in Switzerland, then in France, and from 1939, in the United States. His style constantly evolved: from vibrant Russian folklore, he moved to neoclassicism (the ballet Pulcinella, the opera The Rake\’s Progress), and in his later years, he used serial technique. Stravinsky toured extensively as a conductor and left behind a vast legacy—from symphonies and operas to sacred music (Symphony of Psalms, Requiem). He died in 1971 in New York and, in accordance with his will, was buried in Venice next to Diaghilev. Link to biography.
