Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev was born in 1906 in Ukraine into a working-class family. After finishing school and a technical college, he worked as a land surveyor, then graduated from a metallurgical institute in Dneprodzerzhinsk and worked as an engineer. During the Great Patriotic War, he served as a political officer in the army, rising to the rank of Major General, but saw little direct combat action.
After the war, Brezhnev quickly climbed the party ladder: he served as First Secretary in Moldova, then in Kazakhstan. In 1964, he led a conspiracy against Khrushchev and became the First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, later also assuming the chairmanship of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet. His 18-year rule became known as the “Era of Stagnation” — the economy barely grew, while bureaucracy and corruption flourished.
Under Brezhnev, the USSR achieved military parity with the United States. Key arms limitation agreements (SALT I) and the Helsinki Accords on human rights were signed. However, at the end of his rule, Soviet troops entered Afghanistan, leading to a protracted and bloody war.
In his final years, Brezhnev was seriously ill, spoke and thought poorly, but remained in power thanks to loyal associates. His death in November 1982 opened the way for a new generation of Soviet leaders. Link to biography.
