Stephen Hawking

British theoretical physicist, professor at Oxford University. He studied at Oxford and then spent his career at Cambridge, where he has held a chair since 1977. His work dealt with cosmology in various aspects, including black holes, singularities, and the “big bang” theory of the origin of the universe. His popular works are also notable, especially 1988’s A Brief History of Time. Hawking had suffered from the neuromotor disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which causes extreme physical disability, since the 1960s; he communicated using a computer and a voice synthesizer.
