KARMIC INDICATORS

Karmic indicators help a person become aware of deep-rooted problems that go back to past lives, and begin working on themselves in order to overcome them and improve both this life and, potentially, the next one. Karmic problems should not be understood as punishment for misdeeds and sins, as karma is usually interpreted in the everyday sense. Karma is not retribution, but rather inertia, when a person attracts similar situations from one life to another. From a karmic point of view, every element of the natal chart can be interpreted without exception. However, the most important indicators of karma in the horoscope are retrograde planets, if any, and the Lunar Nodes.

Retrograde Planets

Retrograde planets are always connected with turning back to the past. The more retrograde planets a person has in the horoscope, the stronger their connection with the past. A retrograde planet also points to an unresolved task from a past life, unfinished business, or unrealized abilities. It forces the person to take up again what could not be completed in the past. Retrograde Mercury — Individuality

When Mercury is retrograde in the horoscope, the individual’s conscious mind is able to intercept ideas from the universal consciousness of earlier times. Usually, they are not aware of this, but they are aware that they cannot easily make others understand everything they know. This is partly connected with the inversion of the Mercury symbol, in which the significance of Matter exceeds the significance of Spirit and Soul. This makes the individual concerned with the form of their ideas. And this acts as a barrier to the essence of their knowledge.

In addition, the wavelength of their mind differs slightly from what is accepted in society. Thought processes tend to repeat themselves like an endless recording, and as a result, most of the things they create are, in one form or another, copies of what they have already done. When they speak, it is difficult for them to project the exact telepathic pictures that convey the meanings of their thoughts. Thus, they often feel misunderstood and wonder why others do not always see things the same way they do.

They see themselves as more separate from society than a person with Mercury in direct motion may be. As a result, they desperately try to develop contacts with other people, overemphasizing their ideas until they begin to irritate those around them. Feeling constrained in company, they make great efforts to win the favor of others. Nevertheless, at the slightest hint of rejection, they may give up too easily. Ultimately, they learn that in order to have self-confidence, they must become more detached and impartial than people with Mercury in direct motion. This is often interpreted by others as “coldness,” but it is simply the vibration of retrograde Mercury, which is so obviously disharmonious with the vibrations of direct motion. Behind the apparent wall, this individual is far more sensitive than most people can imagine.

Once the communication barrier has been crossed, tremendous understanding and intuition emanate from retrograde Mercury. The retrograde individual does not fit into the ideas and opinions of the people around them. Instead, they can find peace in gratitude for their unique way of seeing things.

It is interesting to note that many people with musical talent have retrograde Mercury. Perhaps awareness of difficulties with spoken language led them to another form of communication, one that has much greater freedom and many levels of subtle mental and emotional expression.

Retrograde Mercury — Karma

A person with retrograde Mercury must experience unresolved relationship karma. They react to others as if those people symbolize figures from their past. Thus, it is difficult for them to keep the focus of their consciousness on the “here and now.” Usually, this manifests as difficulties with family and relatives. But the issue of relationships extends beyond communication with other people and includes the perception of the universe as a whole. There is often a problem characteristic of retrograde Mercury in terms of seeing what may be called an inverted reality. The individual has difficulty understanding the basic relationship between cause and effect. They explore the essence of life itself, yet often cannot see the simple connections between things, circumstances, and people. Lost in thoughts that lie beyond their understanding, they must learn to be content with the simple things on which life is based. They are so absorbed in uncovering what is beyond their understanding that they almost always miss the obvious.

From a karmic point of view, this individual must learn to focus attention on the reality of the present rather than lose themselves in all the apparent layers they perceive. When they are able to do this, they will be able to establish a solid point of reference in the “here and now,” through which all the discoveries they make can be expressed to the outer world.

Retrograde Mercury in Aquarius

This is one of the best positions for retrograde Mercury. The Uranian air quality of Aquarius gives Mercury enough space to comfortably experience the three-phase retrograde process through different dimensions of time and space. In Phase I, the individual feels happy leaping into the future, but does not want to spread into other people’s space. In Phase III, they are happy because they do not violate other people’s space, and they are glad to explore the past again in order to unearth extraordinary discoveries that will be useful at another future moment in time. In the cross-vibration of Phase II, the individual experiences a brief rest from research, but may be happy helping others. In all three phases, there is something for retrograde Mercury in Aquarius, which makes the individual so remarkably unique and original.

Although it may seem that they do not always have common sense, and at times show less stability than others would like to see in them, they have an enormous range of ideas that they draw from the most unusual places. Society usually fails to notice these ideas. They may take a concept as old as the world, change it slightly, and it may not be accepted for a millennium after they have proposed it. Their mental energies tend to flutter rather than hold a definite focus for a long period of time, and they may discuss a wide variety of topics in a single conversation. Although it may not seem that they are proving any point, they nevertheless prove that point in the strangest way. Others will understand them better days, weeks, or months after communicating with them than at the moment of conversation. They often bring with them from a past life into the present time — into a time when the world may be more ready to accept their ideas — the necessary details for remarkable inventions.

Retrograde Mercury in the Seventh House

This is one of the most difficult positions for retrograde Mercury, since the individual’s attempt at analysis is always colored by what they see through the eyes of other people. They spend most of their time in Phase III, going back and sorting through what they have already experienced from the point of view of how well it balances with the likes and dislikes of those they love. They experience disappointments in the spheres of marriage, career, and family, because they tend to go back and harmonize all the ideas of the people around them. They become angry because they cannot spend enough time thinking about themselves. They are often misunderstood by those to whom they are trying to explain something, because they focus their energy more through other people’s minds than through their own. This makes them feel nervous in the company of others, and as a result, they do not always express themselves to the best of their potential. Their marriage partner may be in a childlike position and, in some cases, may actually be looking in them for past qualities of a sister or brother.

Karmically, they are learning to balance the focus of their ideas through the needs of the people around them. The person often goes back, reevaluating ideas that others have merely touched upon, and by looking at the picture from both sides, they can eventually develop a more complete perspective. This position is so difficult because the person uses their energy in a more impersonal way. It is better to use this position in relation to outsiders in the individual’s life than for personal needs.

Mercury is a personal planet, and when retrograde, it tends to be introverted. Here, however, in the Seventh House, it can function neither personally nor in an introverted way, and this is where the frustration lies.

Retrograde Venus — Individuality

A person with retrograde Venus differs noticeably from a person with Venus in direct motion. Here, there is a tendency to create grievances and wounds within and work through them internally, whereas Venus in direct motion would try to work them through outwardly. Often, retrograde Venus not only creates these grievances and wounds, but also tends to exaggerate their effect. Excessive emphasis is placed on the lack of love in the individual’s life. For such a person, the path of love does not flow smoothly.

Excessively shy, they usually doubt whether people pay attention to them. Not always certain of their likes and dislikes, they experience a discrepancy between their life and their awareness of it. They may be deeply in love and not realize it until years after the relationship has ended. They experience many similar behavior patterns designed to keep them from entering the reality of what they think they truly need.

There is always difficulty with the opposite sex, since the individual tends to subconsciously preprogram their future relationships so that they fit the patterns of their past.

Great insecurity corresponds to this position, since the individual constantly tries to measure up to the people whose paths cross theirs. But in doing so, they semi-consciously continue pushing others away so that no one truly comes to know them deeply enough to threaten the small degree of confidence and security on which they have based their identity. In this position, the individual blocks themselves from happiness by trying too hard to achieve it.

Retrograde Venus — Karma

When Venus is retrograde, the individual carries with them a misunderstanding of love from a past life. The emotional pain was so strong that they now cut themselves off from fully experiencing the richness of love because they are afraid of being wounded again. Whether male or female, there is great difficulty in relationships with the opposite sex in the current life.

Trying to live in the present, they endlessly recreate the past memory of love from a previous incarnation, which continues to elude them. They react to the present as if they are actually living in their past. In this sense, they are fixed at some point in time, and no matter what they do, there will hardly be the forward movement they say they want.

In men’s charts, this sometimes indicates karma connected with homosexuality. But even homosexuality has its levels, ranging from an openly homosexual man who tries to politically promote homosexuality to the world, to a man who will not tolerate even the word in his presence, who is married but looks for every opportunity to avoid women while proving his masculinity. In the life of the latter type of man, everything revolves around male friends. Under the pretext of attending clubs, associations, and so on, he avoids the company of women. He may function respectably in society, but he is still a latent homosexual. Less often, similar reactions are found in women with retrograde Venus.

The most noticeable karmic pattern is that the individual, whether male or female, has a strong tendency to distrust most offers of love, feeling that those who make these offers usually have hidden motives.

Retrograde Venus in Aquarius

Here, the individual feels most comfortable during Phase I of the retrograde process. They can explore needs whose glimpses they sense before these needs become real in their life. At times, they may become commanding and domineering in their desire to help others, sometimes unintentionally interfering with them. They are very independent and cannot easily accept restrictions. Their attachments are spread among so many things, people, and circumstances that those close to them cannot focus their energy. Much of this scattering, however, is simply a reflection of their very changeable nature.
