Edith Piaf (real name Edith Giovanna Gassion) was born on December 19, 1915 in Paris. She grew up in a poor family and from an early age began singing on the streets to earn a living.
In 1935, Edith was noticed by Louis Leple, the owner of a cabaret, who gave her a chance to perform on stage. It was he who came up with her stage name – Piaf, which means “sparrow” in slang. Her first success came with the song “La Vie en rose”, which became the singer’s calling card.
Piaf became one of the most famous French performers, her voice was unique, and her songs often reflected her difficult fate and deep feelings. In addition to her singing career, she also acted in films and wrote songs.
Edith Piaf lived a turbulent life, full of personal tragedies, losses and health problems. She suffered from addiction, but continued to perform until the end of her days. Edith Piaf died on October 10, 1963 from liver cancer at the age of 47. She left behind a rich legacy and remains one of the most influential figures in the history of French music.
