Mikhail Gorbachev

Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev was born on March 2, 1931, in the village of Privolnoye in the Stavropol region, into a peasant family. In his youth, he worked as a combine harvester operator and was even awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for his high productivity. After school, he entered the law faculty of Moscow State University, where he joined the Communist Party and began his political career. Returning to Stavropol, he quickly rose through the party ranks and became First Secretary of the regional committee in 1970. In 1978, he was transferred to Moscow, and in 1985, he was elected General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee — the youngest at that time.
Coming to power, Gorbachev launched large-scale reforms that went down in history as perestroika (restructuring). He proclaimed a policy of glasnost (openness and freedom of speech), accelerated economic changes, and tried to reform the socialist system. In foreign policy, he pursued a course of easing tensions with the West, which led to the signing of agreements with the United States on the elimination of intermediate-range nuclear forces. It was thanks to Gorbachev that the Berlin Wall fell, Germany was reunified, and the Cold War came to an end. In 1990, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
However, at home, his reforms led to an economic crisis, shortages of goods, and growing public discontent. In 1991, an August coup attempt took place, after which real power passed to Boris Yeltsin and the leaders of the Soviet republics. On December 25, 1991, Gorbachev resigned as President of the USSR, and the following day the Soviet Union officially ceased to exist.
After his resignation, he founded the Gorbachev Foundation, engaged in social activities, wrote books, and criticized Russian authorities. Mikhail Gorbachev died on August 30, 2022, at the age of 91.
