Karmic indicators help a person become aware of deep-rooted problems that go back to past lives, and begin working on themselves in order to overcome them and improve both this life and, potentially, the next one. Karmic problems should not be understood as punishment for misdeeds and sins, as karma is usually interpreted in the everyday sense. Karma is not retribution, but rather inertia, when a person attracts similar situations from one life to another. From a karmic point of view, every element of the natal chart can be interpreted without exception. However, the most important indicators of karma in the horoscope are retrograde planets, if any, and the Lunar Nodes.
Retrograde Planets
Retrograde planets are always connected with turning back to the past. The more retrograde planets a person has in the horoscope, the stronger their connection with the past. A retrograde planet also points to an unresolved task from a past life, unfinished business, or unrealized abilities. It forces the person to take up again what could not be completed in the past. Retrograde Mercury — Individuality
When Mercury is retrograde in the horoscope, the individual’s conscious mind is able to intercept ideas from the universal consciousness of earlier times. Once the communication barrier has been crossed, tremendous understanding and intuition emanate from retrograde Mercury. The retrograde individual does not fit into the ideas and opinions of the people around them. Instead, they can find peace in gratitude for their unique way of seeing things.
It is interesting to note that many people with musical talent have retrograde Mercury. Perhaps awareness of difficulties with spoken language led them to another form of communication, one that has much greater freedom and many levels of subtle mental and emotional expression.
Retrograde Mercury — Karma
A person with retrograde Mercury must experience unresolved relationship karma. They react to others as if those people symbolize figures from their past. Thus, it is difficult for them to keep the focus of their consciousness on the “here and now.” Usually, this manifests as difficulties with family and relatives. But the issue of relationships extends beyond communication with other people and includes the perception of the universe as a whole. There is often a problem characteristic of retrograde Mercury in terms of seeing what may be called an inverted reality. The individual has difficulty understanding the basic relationship between cause and effect. They explore the essence of life itself, yet often cannot see the simple connections between things, circumstances, and people. Lost in thoughts that lie beyond their understanding, they must learn to be content with the simple things on which life is based. They are so absorbed in uncovering what is beyond their understanding that they almost always miss the obvious.
From a karmic point of view, this individual must learn to focus attention on the reality of the present rather than lose themselves in all the apparent layers they perceive. This individual is a very deep and balanced thinker. Once they have made a mistake, they recognize it on a deep level and with a strong sense of perspective. They can then return to the source, or to a similar structure, and make it work properly.
In the early years, they apparently do everything with tension, but this helps them accomplish a great deal later. Self-expression is difficult for them, because they try too hard to focus attention on the precise meaning. Thus, they like to speak only about things that are either meaningful and serious, or that represent sobriety and prudence.
They do not like living a spontaneous life, since it is easier for them to be in harmony with the purpose of their own thought patterns than with the natural flow of forces in the world around them. The person brings into this incarnation knowledge of how to achieve physical goals. This position will apparently bring the individual into the company of those who are young and immature. Developing themselves, they bring primordial karma into this incarnation. Not fully understanding how to direct mental energies outward, they become part of everything they think they are projecting. Thus, it is difficult for them to understand where they end and where the outer world begins. Like a child, they need attention, but they do not always know how to use that attention when they receive it. They rush into certain situations in a panic, only to withdraw into themselves immediately afterward. Their greatest problem is to discover who they really are; through karma, they carefully examine constant doubts about their self-identity. And again, like a child, they are very impatient in trying to find this out. Not waiting for an understanding of the world to come to them, they rush into it in order to learn everything possible — yesterday.
However, it is difficult for the person to measure what they know when they find what they think they were looking for. With this position, the astrologer should expect a slight lack of balance among all the other planets in the horoscope, since Mercury’s focal lens for expressing all the planetary energies is subject to the three-phase retrograde process.
Retrograde Mars — Individuality
It is not easy for this individual to coordinate their needs. They have difficulty coordinating thought and action. The past, everything they have truly experienced, remains on the periphery of their consciousness. They also experience sexual difficulties because of the reverse magnetism of the retrograde planet. This is mainly due to their inability to regulate the flow of energy that this planetary position causes them to experience.
Much of what they will experience depends less on thoughts or emotions and more on the ability to manage their energy levels in coordination with the energies they receive from other people. They may react very strongly to a person. Their powerful attachments or dislikes may be based entirely on energies rather than on human sympathies.
Because of this, the individual’s relationships are almost always somewhat distorted. On the sexual level, they apparently symbolize more of a struggle for survival than an actual union with another person. They may jump to conclusions while at the same time delaying the necessary actions that would correct whatever is troubling them. If retrograde Mars is in an air sign, the individual is unusually mentally active and finds it difficult to learn how to relax.
This Mars position is more difficult for women than for men, because the drive system may not correspond to the rest of the horoscope and may diminish femininity. Very few women with this Mars position have, on a subconscious level, a love for men in general. However, on the conscious level, the clear opposite sometimes appears through placing men on a pedestal. This creates a kind of idol worship that brings the woman closer to her subconscious reality by inwardly creating the need to remove the pedestal.
In most positions, retrograde Mars produces a feeling of guilt that isolates the individual, leaving them apart from the free personal relationships characteristic of people with Mars in direct motion.
Retrograde Mars — Karma
When Mars is retrograde in the horoscope, all the individual’s actions in the current life are a restoration of the past. In this life, the individual tries to find people who symbolize those who satisfied them in past incarnations. In their mind, they assign roles to these figures who no longer exist and try, with them, to act out everything they could not previously express. They exert too much influence on people in an attempt to “fit” them into the imaginary roles they have devised for them. They encounter rejection that is too strong and deeply felt, but they do not understand why; they retreat into themselves, never fully experiencing the relationships of their current life in the present moment.
They tend to focus on those times in the past when they dealt with force. Now they subconsciously call forth a vibration toward that same force, whether it is anger, revenge, hostility, or the wrong action of each person in the present. In some cases, they may carry hostility from a past life that makes them distrust the actions of other people. In at least one past life, they experienced suspicious actions or deception from others. The residue of this in the current life weighs heavily on their present behavior.
Retrograde Mars in Leo
Here, the individual may become an island unto themselves. Leo’s pride combines with the force of Mars to create an inner sense of power over other people. The individual rarely acknowledges their influence on others. They may come on too strongly, causing others to back away from them in fear when their weaknesses are pointed out. This occurs during Phase I, which intensifies the reaction. The individual’s opinion of themselves is very subjective and is based more on their current drive than on how other people respond to them. If there is an individual who very much wants to be honest, yet at the same time be an egotist, it is this person.
