Steffi Graf was born on June 14, 1969, in Mannheim, Germany. Her father, who became her first coach and introduced her to tennis at the age of three, introduced her to the sport. She began her professional career at age 13 and soon became one of the most prominent figures in world tennis. Graf’s crowning achievement was the 1988 Golden Slam: she won all four Grand Slam tournaments and Olympic gold in Seoul in a single year. She is the only woman to have achieved this feat in women’s tennis history. She has won 22 Grand Slam singles titles in her career, placing her fourth all-time in the Open Era. She held the world number one ranking for a record 377 weeks, including 186 consecutive weeks. In addition to the Seoul gold, she also won silver in Barcelona in 1992 and bronze in doubles at the 1988 Games.
