Dustin Hoffman

American actor who created some of the most unforgettable characters in film history, winning two Oscars and five Oscar nominations, as well as an Emmy Award, over the course of his 30-year career. By all accounts, he is one of the country’s two or three most accomplished actors, perhaps the most powerful man in American cinema since Marlon Brando. “You’re always looking for something that, ultimately, you probably know is out of your reach,” he says, wondering if each of them could be a writer, artist or musician, and knowing that his blank notebooks are simply a symbol of many pages that will remain empty. While he may rue the compromises he made, the goals he didn’t achieve, Hoffman also appreciates the pages he filled so well.
His most memorable films include All the President’s Men, Tootsie and the two for which he won an Oscar: Kramer vs. Kramer, in which he played a single father opposite Meryl Streep, and Rain Man . in which he played an autistic savant opposite Tom Cruise. He was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for Midnight Cowboy in 1969. Hoffman won an Emmy Award for his television production of Death of a Salesman and finally won an Academy Award for Best Actor for Kramer vs. Kramer in 1979. Not every film was a winner, and there were duds along the way, such as 1987’s Ishtar.
