А french writer, playwright and journalist. One of the most widely read French authors, a master of the adventure novel. His father, General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, was the son of a French aristocrat and a black slave from Haiti. Having lost his father at an early age, Dumas and his family experienced financial difficulties, which forced Alexander to leave school and go to work to support his mother.
In 1822, Dumas moved to Paris, where he began working as a clerk for the Duke of Orleans. Here he became interested in theater and literature. His plays quickly gained popularity, but it was his historical novels that brought him real fame. The most famous of them are “The Three Musketeers” (1844), “Twenty Years After” (1845), “The Vicomte de Bragelonne, or Ten Years After” (1850), as well as “The Count of Monte Cristo” (1844-1845).
Dumas was a prolific writer, collaborating with several authors, but often working with Auguste Macquet, who assisted him in writing and editing many of his works. During his life, Dumas wrote more than 250 books.
Dumas was also involved in journalism and publishing. In 1851, he founded the Musketeer magazine, in which he published both his own works and the works of other authors.
Dumas’s personal life was full of romantic adventures and scandals. He was the father of several children, including Alexandre Dumas son, who also became a famous writer.
Alexandre Dumas died on December 5, 1870 in Puy, near Dieppe, France. His works continue to be popular and are translated into many languages, and he is considered one of the greatest French writers. Link to biography.
