Karmic problems should not be understood as punishment for misdeeds and sins, as karma is usually interpreted in the everyday sense. Karma is not retribution, but rather inertia, when a person attracts similar situations from one life to another. From a karmic point of view, every element of the natal chart can be interpreted without exception. However, the most important indicators of karma in the horoscope are retrograde planets, if any, and the Lunar Nodes.
Retrograde Planets
Retrograde planets are always connected with turning back to the past. The more retrograde planets a person has in the horoscope, the stronger their connection with the past. A retrograde planet also points to an unresolved task from a past life, unfinished business, or unrealized abilities. It forces the person to take up again what could not be completed in the past. Retrograde Mercury — Individuality

The individual has difficulty understanding the basic relationship between cause and effect. In fact, they exist on different planes of thought at the same time. This ability to experience different frequencies of thought simultaneously makes them a consummate mimic. Here, the individual experiences more mental freedom than practical application of their thoughts. As they pass through the retrograde phases, they may be an inspirer of ideas for others during Phase I, or, at the other extreme, a dreamer during Phase III, reflecting on what they could have done but did not do. The Uranian need for excitement and the mental need for stimulation make Phase II the most uncomfortable one for the individual. As a result, the combination of Phases I and III causes the individual to experience great impracticality in their thinking. They find it difficult to establish meaning and significance. On a personal level, retrograde Uranus creates disorder in human relationships. The native experiences an inner changeability that often makes them hypocritical toward themselves.
