Vivien Leigh is a British actress best known for her roles as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) and Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951).
Vivien Mary Hartley was born in Darjeeling, India, where her father worked for a brokerage firm. At the age of six she was sent to England for her education.
She began her acting career in theater and film in the UK. In 1932, she married lawyer Lee Holman and took his last name.
Vivienne gained worldwide fame thanks to her role as Scarlett O’Hara in the film Gone with the Wind. This role brought her her first Oscar.
In the mid-1930s, she began an affair with actor Laurence Olivier, whom she later married. Together they played in many theater productions and films.
The role of Blanche Dubois in the film of the same name became another iconic work of Vivienne and brought her a second Oscar.
In the 1960s, her health deteriorated due to tuberculosis and bipolar disorder. Vivien Leigh died at the age of 53 in London.
