Catherine the Great

Catherine II Alexeyevna (1729–1796) was a Russian empress who reigned from 1762 to 1796 and went down in history as Catherine the Great. Born Princess Sophie Augusta Frederica of Anhalt-Zerbst, she was born in Prussia and arrived in Russia in 1744 as the bride of Grand Duke Peter Feodorovich (the future Peter III). She converted to Orthodoxy and was given the name Catherine Alexeyevna. In 1762, with the support of the guard, she staged a palace coup, overthrew her husband, and ascended the throne. During her reign, Russia significantly expanded its borders: the partitions of Poland resulted in the annexation of Right-Bank Ukraine, Belarus, and Lithuania, while victories in wars with the Ottoman Empire secured Crimea and the northern Black Sea region for the country. Domestically, Catherine pursued a policy of “enlightened absolutism”: provincial reforms were carried out, the rights of the nobility were expanded, new cities, schools, and hospitals were founded. However, the situation of the serfs deteriorated significantly, culminating in a major uprising led by Pugachev (1773–1775). Retrograde Planets
