Physicist and chemist from New Zealand, known as the father of nuclear physics. He is considered the greatest experimentalist since Michael Faraday.
In his early work, he discovered the concept of radioactive half-life, proved that radioactivity involves the transmutation of one chemical element into another, and differentiated and named alpha and beta radiation. This work was performed at McGill University in Canada. This is the basis for the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which he received in 1908 “for his studies of the decay of elements and the chemistry of radioactive substances.”
Upon his death on October 19, 1937, he was given the honor of being buried alongside the greatest of scientists next to the tomb of Sir Isaac Newton in Westminster Abbey. The chemical element rutherfordium (element 104) was named in his honor in 1997. Link to biography.
