Ingrid Bergman is a Swedish actress who has become one of the most famous and revered stars of world cinema. Her career spans over five decades and she has left a significant mark on film history with her talents and variety of roles.
Ingrid Bergman was born into the family of the artist Just Bergman and his wife Frida. Her mother died when Ingrid was three years old, and her father when she was thirteen. She grew up with aunts and uncles, and began to show interest in acting as a teenager. Bergman studied at the Royal Dramatic Theater in Stockholm and began her acting career in Sweden in the mid-1930s.
In 1939, Bergman was invited to Hollywood to star in a remake of her successful Swedish film Intermezzo. The film was a huge success and she quickly became one of Hollywood’s leading actresses. During her career, she won three Oscars: for her roles in the films Gaslight (1944), Anastasia (1956) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974).
Some of her most famous films include Casablanca (1942), where she starred opposite Humphrey Bogart, The Enchantress (1945), The Notorious (1946) and Autumn Sonata (1978).
Ingrid Bergman was married three times. Her first marriage to Petr Lindström lasted from 1937 to 1950, and they had a daughter, Pia. Her second marriage to Italian director Roberto Rossellini was particularly scandalous, as it began while both were still married to other people. This marriage produced three children: son Robertino and twin daughters Isabella and Isotta. In 1957 she married Lars Schmidt, with whom she remained until 1975.
Ingrid Bergman remained active until the end of her life, despite battling breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in the 1970s. She died on August 29, 1982 in London, on her 67th birthday.
