Jason Robards (July 26, 1922, Chicago, Illinois, USA – December 26, 2000, Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA) is an outstanding American theater and film actor, an Oscar and Tony Award winner, and a recognized master of dramatic art.
Jason Nelson Robards was born in Chicago to actor Jason Robards Sr. From an early age he was surrounded by theater and cinema, which predetermined his future career. In 1939, after graduating from high school, Jason entered Douglas University, but his studies were interrupted by World War II.
During the war, Robards served in the US Navy and saw action in the Pacific. His service had a significant impact on his future life and worldview. He was aboard the USS Nashville when it was damaged by a Japanese attack, but Robards survived.
After the war, Robards returned to acting and began his career on the stage. He became one of the leading actors in Eugene O’Neill’s productions such as Long Day’s Journey into Night and A Moon for Destiny’s Stepchildren. His skill and deep understanding of O’Neill’s dramaturgy made him one of the most respected stage actors of his time. He won a Tony Award for his role in The Great God Brown.
Robards has also had great success in film. His debut took place in 1959 in the film “Woe to the Vanquished.” However, real fame came to him later, thanks to films such as “All the President’s Men” (1976) and “Julia” (1977). For these roles, he received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor twice in a row. Robards is also known for his roles in Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) and Philadelphia (1993).
Jason Robards was married four times and had six children. His second wife was the famous actress Lauren Bacall, with whom he had a son, Sam Robards, who also became an actor.
Jason Robards remained active until the end of his life, appearing on both stage and in films. He died on December 26, 2000 from lung cancer at the age of 78.
