Italian actor and director, best known for his role as Corrado Cattani in the TV series Octopus.
He made his debut as an actor in the play A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 1969. His first success came with the role of the soldier Paolo Passeri in Marche trionfale (1976, directed by Marco Bellocchio), for which he received the David di Donatello Award. Two years later, he received the Silver Bear award for Best Actor at the 29th Berlin International Film Festival for his role as a homosexual worker in the ironic melodrama Ernesto (1978, Salvatore Samperi).
He appeared in several television films in the 1970s, but 1983 marked the beginning of his greatest popularity on television when he played the lead role of a police inspector investigating the mafia in Damiano Damiani’s series La Piovra. He continued to play the same role for the next three series until his character was killed off.
He was married to actress Simonetta Stefanelli, who is best known for playing Michael Corleone’s first (Sicilian) wife in The Godfather. Their daughter Violante Placido is also an actress.
In 2012, he married actress Federica Vincenti, who is 37 years his junior, after dating each other for more than 10 years.
He has five children – daughter Violante Placido (1976) and two sons – Michelangelo (1990) and Marco Brenno (1991) from Simonetta Stefanelli, illegitimate son Inigo (1988) from actress Virginia Alexandre and son Gabriele (2006) from Federica Vincenti. Link to biography.
