Christian Lacroix is a French fashion designer known for his flamboyant, opulent and extravagant style. He became one of the key figures in fashion in the 1980s and 1990s.
Lacroix was born in Arles, France. He initially studied art history at the University of Montpellier before going on to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. He also studied at the École du Louvre with the goal of becoming a museum curator.
Christian began his career in fashion in 1978, joining the fashion house Hermès. He soon worked at Jean Patou, where his talent was recognized and he became the house’s head designer.
In 1987, Lacroix founded his own fashion house with the financial backing of LVMH. He is known for creating theatrical and opulent haute couture collections, with an emphasis on voluminous silhouettes, bright colors and luxurious materials. One of his famous innovations was the “bolero jacket”, as well as full, ruffled skirts and floral prints.
Lacroix is popular with the elite and has received numerous awards, including the Golden Thimble Award in 1986. His style combined elements of baroque and folklore with elements of modern fashion, creating unique, dramatic looks.
In addition to haute couture, Lacroix also designed costumes for theater, opera, and ballet, which also contributed to his reputation as a creative and versatile artist.
Despite his talent, Lacroix’s brand has faced financial difficulties. In 2009, the House of Lacroix declared bankruptcy, and Christian Lacroix himself has since stepped away from the fashion industry, focusing on other artistic projects such as interior design and theater costumes.
