Henri Matisse is a prominent French artist, one of the leading representatives of modernism and the founder of Fauvism. His work is known for its vibrant colors, expressive forms, and search for harmony in art.
He was born on December 31, 1869 in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France.
He initially studied law, but after an illness in 1890, he began painting.
Early in his career, he was influenced by Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. In 1905, he became a leader of Fauvism, a movement that emphasized the brightness and strength of color.
His famous works from this period include The Joy of Life (1905–1906) and The Red Room (1908).
Matisse used bold colors and simplified forms, striving to convey emotion through color.
In his later years, he created paper cut-outs, such as the Jazz series (1947), which have become icons of his style.
He was married to Amélie Noëlie Parére, with whom he had three children. He traveled a lot, inspired by the culture of the Mediterranean, North Africa and the East.
Despite his deteriorating health, Matisse continued to create, experimenting with new techniques. He designed and decorated the Rosary Chapel in Vence, which he considered his spiritual heritage.
He died on November 3, 1954 in Nice, France.
