Ruby Keeler is an American actress, singer and dancer, born on August 25, 1909 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She became famous for her roles in musical films of the 1930s and is considered one of the first Hollywood stars to specialize in dance routines.
Keeler began her career on Broadway in the late 1920s, where she attracted attention for her talented step dancing. Her film breakthrough came in 1933 with 42nd Street, which became a cult musical and established Ruby Keeler as a star. It was followed by such successful films as Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933) and Baby Broadway (1933).
In 1930, Ruby married singer Al Jolson, which also contributed to her popularity in Hollywood. However, their marriage broke up in 1940.
Ruby Keeler left the film industry in the 1940s, but later returned to the stage in the 1970s, performing in successful theater productions. Her rebirth as a stage star confirmed her talent and resilience.
