Leo Tolstoy was one of the most famous and influential Russian writers, born on September 9, 1828 in Yasnaya Polyana, in the Tula province of the Russian Empire. He was a member of the ancient and noble Tolstoy family. Leo Tolstoy was a cadet by education; he studied at Kazan University, but did not graduate. At the beginning of his literary career, Tolstoy served in the army, participated in the Crimean War, and then traveled around Europe. His writing talent was already evident in the 1850s, and by the 1860s he had become a famous writer for his short stories and novels. Leo Tolstoy’s most famous works include War and Peace and Anna Karenina.
