Leo Tolstoy

Leo Tolstoy was one of the most famous and influential Russian writers, born on September 9, 1828 in Yasnaya Polyana, in the Tula province of the Russian Empire. He was a member of the ancient and noble Tolstoy family. Leo Tolstoy was a cadet by education; he studied at Kazan University, but did not graduate. At the beginning of his literary career, Tolstoy served in the army, participated in the Crimean War, and then traveled around Europe. His writing talent was already evident in the 1850s, and by the 1860s he had become a famous writer for his short stories and novels. Leo Tolstoy’s most famous works include War and Peace and Anna Karenina. War and Peace is one of the greatest novels in world literature, and Anna Karenina is considered one of the masterpieces of Russian realistic prose. In addition to his literary activities, Leo Tolstoy was known as a thinker, philosopher and social reformer. His works trace the theme of moral self-improvement and spiritual transformation of man. He advocated a simple life, non-violence, and also criticized the church and state. Tolstoy was also active in education and charity, founding several schools for peasant children and providing assistance to the poor. Retrograde Planets
