Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll’s real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Famous English writer, mathematician, logician, photographer and teacher. His work had a huge influence on literature and culture.
Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was the eldest son in a large family of an Anglican priest. He showed an early interest in literature and mathematics, as well as theater and performing. At the age of 12 he was sent to Richmond School and then in 1846 he entered Rugby, one of the most prestigious schools in England.
In 1850, Dodgson entered Oxford University, Christ Church College, where he distinguished himself academically. In 1854 he graduated with honors, receiving a bachelor’s degree.
Dodgson achieved his first literary success under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll with the publication of his book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland in 1865. Written for little Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, this piece became an instant classic. The sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, was published in 1871 and also received wide acclaim.
In addition to his literary activities, Dodgson was a recognized mathematician. He taught mathematics at Oxford and wrote several works on mathematics and logic. His works on mathematics include An Elementary Guide to Euclidean Geometry and Symbolic Logic.
Lewis Carroll was also a keen photographer. He took many photographs of children, often depicting them in fairy-tale images. His photographic work also included portraits of famous people of the time.
Dodgson never married and had no children. He led a calm and secluded lifestyle, devoting a lot of time to work and creativity. His relationships with children, especially little girls, have often been the subject of speculation and discussion, but modern research has found no evidence of inappropriate behavior.
Lewis Carroll continued to write and teach for the rest of his life. He died on 14 January 1898 in Guildford, Surrey, England, of pneumonia.
