Viktor Frankl was an Austrian psychiatrist, psychologist, neurologist, and philosopher, widely known as the founder of logotherapy, the third Viennese school of psychotherapy after Freudianism and Adlerianism. He was born on March 26, 1905 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria), to a Jewish family.
Frankl studied medicine at the University of Vienna, specializing in psychiatry and neurology. As a young man, he was interested in psychoanalysis and worked with patients suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies.
During World War II, Frankl and his family were deported to concentration camps. In 1942, he ended up in Auschwitz and then in other camps. In these terrible conditions, he developed his ideas about the meaning of life and human resilience. His core concept was the belief that even in the most difficult circumstances, a person can find meaning in life, and this gives him the strength to survive.
After the war, Frankl returned to Vienna and continued his work as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. In 1946, he published his famous book, Saying Yes to Life: A Psychologist in a Concentration Camp, in which he described his experiences in concentration camps and laid out the foundations of logotherapy.
Frankl’s logotherapy focuses on the search for meaning in life as the main motive of human existence. This approach has had a significant influence on the development of psychotherapy and existential psychology.
