Harvey Weinstein is an American film producer known for his pivotal role in the creation of numerous successful films, as well as the sexual harassment scandal that sparked the #MeToo movement.
He was born on March 19, 1952 in New York City. At a young age, he and his brother Bob began their careers in the entertainment industry, organizing concerts.
In 1979, the brothers founded Miramax Films, which became known for successful independent films such as My Own Private Idaho (1991), Pulp Fiction (1994), and The English Patient (1996). The latter won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
In 2005, after selling Miramax, the brothers founded The Weinstein Company, continuing to produce successful films including The King’s Speech (2010) and Django Unchained (2012).
Sexual harassment allegations: In October 2017, The New York Times and The New Yorker published investigations in which dozens of women, including actresses, accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault. The allegations sparked the global #MeToo movement to combat sexual violence and abuse of power.
In 2020, Weinstein was convicted of sex crimes and sentenced to 23 years in prison. Trials are ongoing in other cases.
