Howard Hughes was an American businessman, aviator, film director, and engineer, known as one of the most eccentric and wealthy figures of his time.
He was born on December 24, 1905 in Houston, Texas. In his youth, he showed an interest in technology and engineering.
He inherited his wealth after the death of his father, who founded the Hughes Tool Company. Hughes invested in various fields, including aircraft manufacturing and cinema.
He produced several films, including Hell’s Angels (1930), Scarface (1932), and Whiplash (1943). The films were distinguished by their expensive production values and innovative technology.
He founded the Hughes Aircraft Company. He set several world records in aviation, including the record for a round-the-world flight in 1938. He also designed the famous Hughes H-4 Hercules, which became the largest seaplane in history.
In 1936, while intoxicated, he fatally struck a pedestrian. He was found not guilty, but the court ordered him to pay $20,000 to the victim’s relatives.
In the last decades of his life, he suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder and a number of other health problems. He lived in isolation, controlling his business empires from a distance.
He died on April 5, 1976, at the age of 70. His fortune was estimated in the billions of dollars, and his inheritance was the subject of numerous lawsuits.
