Johann Joachim Winckelmann

Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717–1768) was a German archaeologist, art historian, and one of the founders of modern art criticism. His works had a huge influence on the development of aesthetics, archaeology, and the study of ancient art.
Short biography:
He was born on December 9, 1717 in Stendal, Germany, into a shoemaker’s family. He received a classical education, studying ancient Greek and Latin, as well as theology and medicine.
He worked as a school teacher and librarian. His interest in ancient art and culture began to form during this period.
In 1755, he converted from Protestantism to Catholicism, which allowed him to receive patronage for a trip to Rome. There, he studied ancient monuments, ruins, and works of art.
In 1755, he published Thoughts on the Imitation of Greek Works in Painting and Sculpture, in which he substantiated the ideal of beauty based on harmony, clarity, and simplicity.
In 1764, his main work, The History of Ancient Art, was published, which became the basis for modern art science. Winckelmann was the first to attempt to systematize ancient art by linking it to historical eras.
His ideas inspired artists and thinkers of the Classicism era, such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Anton Raphael Mengs.
He died on June 8, 1768 in Trieste under tragic circumstances – he was killed by an adventurer during a robbery.
