Dick Powell is an American actor, director, producer, and singer, known for his roles in musical comedies and later as a film noir actor. Powell began his career in Hollywood as a singer and actor in musicals in the 1930s, appearing in films such as 42nd Street (1933) and Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933). In the 1940s, he made an abrupt transition to serious dramatic roles, playing private detective Philip Marlowe in the film noir classic Murder, My Lovely (1944). The role cemented his image as a “hardboiled” detective hero and led to a successful career in film noir.
In the 1950s, Powell became one of the first actors to also work successfully behind the scenes. He moved into directing and producing and in 1952 created his own television company, Four Star Television, which played a key role in the early development of television. Powell left a significant mark on the history of film and television, becoming one of the pioneers of television and successful actor-directors of his time. Link to biography.
