A british writer, poet, translator, linguist and philologist. One of the most famous writers of the 20th century, the author of more than two hundred different publications (37 books, 63 articles, 121 translations) and many unfinished works. At the age of three, he moved to England with his mother and younger brother after his father died of rheumatic fever. In 1904, his mother died, and John and his brother were placed under the care of their guardian, a Catholic priest.
Tolkien was educated at King Edward’s and St Philip’s Schools in Birmingham and then went on to Exeter College, Oxford, where he studied classical literature and languages and later switched to English language and literature. While studying at Oxford, Tolkien met Edith Bratt, whom he married in 1916.
During World War I, Tolkien served as an officer in the British Army and took part in the Battle of the Somme, where he contracted trench fever and was discharged. After the war he returned to Oxford, where he began teaching and doing philological research.
Tolkien became Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford and left significant contributions to the study of Old English language and literature. His greatest fame came from his literary works in the fantasy genre. His first novel, The Hobbit, was published in 1937 and became very popular.
His main works, The Lord of the Rings, were published in three volumes in 1954-1955. These books received wide acclaim and became cult classics in the fantasy genre. In addition to these works, Tolkien wrote many other books related to his fictional world of Middle-earth, such as The Silmarillion, which was published posthumously in 1977 by his son Christopher Tolkien.
Tolkien died on September 2, 1973 in Bournemouth, England. He left behind a huge literary legacy, and his work continues to have a significant influence on literature, cinema and culture at large. Link to biography.
