Lee Miller was an American photographer, photojournalist, model and muse of artists, one of the key figures of surrealism and war photojournalism. Born April 23, 1907 in Poughkeepsie, New York, USA; died July 21, 1977 in Farleigh, East Sussex, England.
Lee began her career as a model in New York City in the 1920s. She was discovered by the famous illustrator Conde Nast, and soon appeared on the covers of Vogue magazine. She is known for her aristocratic beauty and sophisticated style.
In the late 1920s, Lee moved to Paris, where she became a student and partner of the famous photographer Man Ray.
Together they experimented with photography, especially with the solarization technique, which Miller actively used.
During this period, she also created her own surrealist photographs, becoming part of the avant-garde art circle.
In the early 1930s, Miller opened her own photography studio in New York City. Her work included portraits, advertising campaigns, and magazine illustrations.
During World War II, Lee became a war correspondent for Vogue, covering the war in Europe.
She was one of the few female photographers to work at the front. Miller documented the bombing of London, the liberation of Paris, and the concentration camps at Dachau and Buchenwald.
Her famous photograph of herself posing in Hitler’s bathtub in his Munich apartment has become a symbol of her career and the historical moment.
After the war, Lee moved to England, where she focused on her family life. She was married to artist Roland Penrose, with whom she raised her son Anthony.
In her later years, she suffered from post-traumatic stress and depression, which affected her work.
